Vocational Trainings
The vocational training program is primarily dedicated to unemployed girls and boys who have been dropped out of school and whose educational level is therefore very low. The program aims at offering these youngsters a technical training in various fields, so as for them to be able to earn their existence through their own skills.
Auto-rickshaw driving courses:
This training, which focuses exclusively on women, is an innovating experience in Chennai, where auto-rickshaw drivers are traditionally men.
After a 3-month course, the trained ladies can apply for the driving license examination. Once they pass it, SPEED Trust provides them with an auto-rickshaw. The beneficiaries repay it on a daily basis of Rs.100 during 3 years, after which they become the owners of their auto-rickshaw.
These auto-rickshaws are recognizable thanks to the mention
“Ladies Auto – a project of SPEED Trust”.
The Ladies Auto program, launched in December 2004, is already a success, with three licensed women on the Chennai – chaotic – roads and three others following the course. But given the investment required to purchase an auto-rickshaw, SPEED Trust needs outer financial help to face the growing demand.
The purchase of an auto-rickshaw amounts to 150,000 Rs. (3,600$, 3,000 €). If you are willing to help SPEED Trust providing a woman with a vehicle, kindly send an e-mail to igpchennai@rediffmail.com
